DRC To Construct First Hydrogen Plant In Central Africa

Via the DRC’s AGC Press, a report that Kinshasa signed a memorandum of understanding with a French firm for the construction of a hydrogen plant:

A memorandum of understanding was signed on Thursday in Kinshasa, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) between the provincial executive of Kinshasa and Hydrogen of  France SA (HDF Energy) at the Ministry of Energy, with a view to developing a hydrogen photovoltaic power plant, a first in Central Africa, the CPA noted on the spot.

« In a context where we need to quickly strengthen the means of electricity production for the city-province of Kinshasa, the power plant project by HDF, given its technical characteristics, is welcomed with great satisfaction. We are seeking to promote the emergence, as soon as possible, of this first hydrogen power plant project, which could then be duplicated in other provinces, » said Flavien Nkui.

This memorandum of understanding was signed on behalf of the city of Kinshasa by Flavien Nkui Misuru, Minister of Energy, Fisheries and Livestock and the Director of HDF Energy Nicolas Lecomte, for HDF Energy.

The provincial Minister of Energy said that several sites are already being studied in the South of Kinshasa to host the project.

According to Mr. Nicolas Lecomte, Director of HDF: « The demand for electricity in the country is very high. Our solution is the « Renewstable » high-power hydrogen power plant, which is particularly well suited not only to providing the necessary electricity, but also network services to improve the stability and operating conditions of the electricity supply. In addition, our solution is an alternative of choice to supply isolated networks, and contribute to the national development programme of the 145 territories. It can be deployed in rural and remote areas. Also, the hydrogen component of our projects allows the country to acquire the skills that will enable it to seize the best opportunities in the field.

He recalled that HDF Energy is also a manufacturer that will mass-produce, from 2023, in its factory near Bordeaux, the most strategic component of these power plants: high-power fuel cells.

Thanks to this plant, HDF Energy is becoming a major player in the energy sector, but also in heavy maritime and rail mobility. Together with strategic partners, the company is developing hydrogen freight locomotive projects as well as projects for the propulsion of large ships and their auxiliary energy generation.

With a presence on five continents, HDF Energy is developing a business portfolio of more than €5 billion to date.

HDF Energy is listed on compartment B of Euronext, member of the « Euronext Tech Leaders » segment.

HDF Energy, a global pioneer of high power hydrogen power plants, was founded in 2012.

Headquartered in the city of Bordeaux, France, the Company is present on 5 continents, including Africa where the first African hydrogen power plant will be built in the Namibian coastal city of Swakopmund, it was recalled.
