South Sudan Visits UAE To Push for Investment

Via North Africa Post, a report on South Sudan’s Salva Kiir on visit to UAE amid regional tensions and push for investment:

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir Mayardit started on Sunday, June 22, an official visit to the United Arab Emirates, seeking to bolster trade, attract investment, and strengthen bilateral ties.

This marks Kiir’s second visit to the UAE in 2025, following a February 2025 mission focused on economic, energy, agricultural, and infrastructural collaboration.

The visit unfolds against the backdrop of rising regional instability, particularly tensions between Sudan and the UAE, following Khartoum’s decision to sever diplomatic ties over alleged Emirati support for the Rapid Support Forces. Despite this, Kiir’s administration is positioning South Sudan as a viable destination for foreign capital, underpinned by recent economic reforms.

Presidential Press Secretary David Amuor Majur confirmed that Kiir will present the country’s investment outlook to Emirati leaders and business stakeholders, highlighting ongoing efforts to diversify the economy beyond oil dependence.

Since its independence in 2011, South Sudan has grappled with chronic instability and economic fragility. The UAE remains a critical partner, providing humanitarian support and maintaining active diplomatic and trade relations. Kiir’s diplomatic agenda includes high-level discussions centered on infrastructure development, peacebuilding, and enhancing investor confidence in the nascent economy. This strategic outreach, despite the volatility of the region, signals Juba’s intent to reposition itself on the global economic map, leveraging Gulf partnerships as a springboard for growth and recovery.
